"He Only Hears Me When I'm Right in Front of Him"

Lalonde and McCreery (2020) tested children in a lab. Seeing a face helped them hear speech in noise. That included children with typical hearing. We could read only the study's summary. In our reading, watching faces in noise is ordinary. In our view, a hearing check is worth doing early. Ask your child's doctor whether hearing has been checked recently.

TL;DR

  1. Your child seems to hear you best face to face. That is a behavior. The behavior alone does not tell you why.
  2. Lalonde and McCreery (2020) tested how well 48 children heard speech in noise. Some had hearing loss and some did not. Seeing the speaker's face helped both groups. It was a lab study. We could read only the study's summary. Ask your child's doctor whether hearing has been checked recently.
  3. In our reading, watching faces in noise is ordinary. It is not a sign of any one thing.
  4. Of the professional and government sources we read, only one lists watching the speaker's lips. It is a Texas state guide for school hearing screening. The guide treats lip watching as a reason to check hearing. It does not name a cause. Ask your child's doctor whether hearing has been checked recently.

What watching your face cannot tell you

Your child seems to hear you best face to face. That is a behavior. The behavior alone does not tell you why.

Nothing on this page rules anything in or out, and we are not able to.

Our rule is to describe patterns on these pages. We do not put a name on a child.

Hearing is worth checking early

In our view, a hearing check is worth doing early. Ask your child's doctor whether hearing has been checked recently.

A speech-language pathologist can also screen and refer you to an audiologist. An audiologist tests hearing.

In our view, you can talk with the teacher at the same time. A teacher can spot listening trouble in class.

Why a face helps

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) is a US body for speech and hearing professionals.

As of 2026, ASHA says that up close, most speech comes straight from the speaker. That direct sound gets weaker with distance.

ASHA also says younger children often find speech in noise harder than adults do. That holds even when their hearing is normal.

Lalonde and McCreery (2020) tested how well 48 children heard speech in noise. Nineteen of them had hearing loss. Seeing the speaker's face helped both groups of children. That included the children with typical hearing. It was a lab study. We could read only the study's summary.

Gijbels and colleagues (2024) tested 161 children in a lab. Children of all ages in the study gained from seeing the face. We could read only the study's summary.

Is watching lips a sign?

Of the professional and government sources we read, only one lists watching the speaker's lips. It is a Texas state guide for school hearing screening. The guide treats lip watching as a reason to check hearing. It does not name a cause.

ASHA's list of hearing signs in children does not include watching lips. Nor does the list from the UK's National Health Service.

Ask your child's doctor whether hearing has been checked recently.

If your child has lost a skill

Some children could do something and now cannot. That is different from a child who has not built the skill yet. Our position is that a lost skill goes to a doctor first, not a tutor.

When to ask for help

Each of these is a reason to ask for help on its own.

If no skill has gone, start with the teacher. Say what you are seeing at home, and what you have tried. Beyond the teacher, the right person depends on what it turns out to be about. If the work is too hard, someone who works on that school skill. If worry or mood is the thing, someone who works with children's mental health. In our view, delays in speech, language or movement are worth raising with your child's doctor. In our view, if you are worried enough to ask, a professional evaluation is worth asking about.

Any talk of hurting themselves is a same-day call to your doctor or a crisis line.

In the classroom

1

If a student responds best when facing you, tell the family what you see.

2

Two sentences for an email home: "She answers well when I am facing her. Does that happen at home too?"

3

ASHA's classroom advice includes giving visual cues along with speech.

“

Tonight, note two times your child did not respond to you. Note how far away you were, and what else was going on. Bring the notes when you ask your child's doctor about hearing. This is a record, not a test.
