Reading and Spelling Exercise Series

This video series is designed to help students strengthen both reading and spelling skills. By focusing on letter names and spelling patterns in single-syllable words, it provides a comprehensive approach to literacy development, ensuring your child’s reading and spelling skills improve with each session.

How It Works:
Each video has three parts:

  1. First, watch as each letter appears and is named (spelled out). The short vowel is highlighted in a different color. After spelling the complete word, a picture appears showing what the word means.
  2. Next, spell out the word (say each letter’s name) along with the instructor [Laura Lurns] as the letters appear. The picture appears again.
  3. Finally, try spelling out the word as each letter appears.

Why This Works:

  1. Visual-Auditory Connections: Learning letter names while seeing them strengthens the connection between visual letter recognition and spelling ability. This is crucial for both reading and writing skills.
  2. Dual Coding: Students create more robust memory pathways by learning how to spell and what the word means (through the picture). The brain remembers information better when it’s connected to multiple types of knowledge.
  3. Smart Picture Timing: Like in the phonics series, showing the word before the picture prevents guessing habits and ensures proper focus on letter sequences.
  4. Muscle Memory: Speaking the letter names while seeing them helps create muscle memory for spelling, which is especially helpful when students begin writing.
  5. Building Orthographic Memory: Regular practice with spelling patterns helps students develop strong mental images of words, improving reading and spelling fluency.

Simple Instructions:

  1. Find a quiet place to watch the videos
  2. Follow along with each video, doing what the instructor asks
  3. Practice daily for best results
  4. Don’t rush – it’s okay to pause or replay if needed

That’s it! The videos will guide you through everything else.

This series complements the phonics exercises by building strong spelling awareness alongside reading skills. Together, they provide a comprehensive approach to literacy development.
