What Causes Dyscalculia?
Like dyslexia, there is no single cause of dyscalculia.
Underlying causes can vary and more often several are at play. Some common causes are:
- Difficulty with abstract concepts
- Working memory weaknesses. Thes can be further broken down into visual memory, auditory memory, spatial memory
- Fine motor problems
- Spatial reasoning dificulties
There is some indication that dyscalculia may be a genetic condition. However due to the complexity this is not proven. It can also stem from developmental problems such as fetal alcohol syndrome or Turner’s syndrome.
