Before You Buy Anything for Your Struggling Learner, Understand This

You’ve probably already tried something. A phonics app, a tutor, a workbook, more drilling. Maybe it helped a little and then stalled. And now you’re evaluating the next thing with the same nagging question: why didn’t the last thing work?

This course exists to answer that question properly — before you spend another dollar or another month. It’s the foundation course of the Brain Bloom System, and it lays out, in plain language, how this whole approach works and why it’s built the way it is.

TL;DR

  1. The core idea: reading, writing, and math are outputs. Underneath them sit the skills the work runs on — and that layer is what most programs never check.
  2. This course walks the foundations one at a time: tiny wins, growth mindset, emotional regulation, movement, cognitive micro-skills, motivation, and routines — in 5–15 minute sessions.
  3. It addresses public-school and homeschooling parents separately, because your role in each is genuinely different.

What most programs miss, and why children stall

A child whose eyes lose the line rereads it and tires early. A child who can’t pull one voice out of a noisy room misses the instruction everyone assumed they heard. A child braced for failure spends the lesson managing dread instead of learning. None of that is fixed by more phonics — not because phonics doesn’t matter, but because the difficulty isn’t living where everyone is looking.

Our position is simple: build the underlying skills in their own right, keep the academic instruction going alongside, and coach the parent through both. This course isn’t about teaching academics — it’s about building the skills your child needs to thrive in them. Whether your child’s struggle looks like dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, or has no name at all, the approach is the same: skills, built directly, one tiny win at a time.

A diagnosis describes where your child is today. It does not predict where they’ll be in a year of the right kind of practice.

– Laura Lurns

What’s inside

  • Tiny wins, big growth — the kaizen rhythm: steps small enough that starting stops being scary
  • Growth mindset — responding to effort rather than ability, so your child stays in the game
  • Mastering emotions — emotional regulation worked as a skill, not hoped for as a byproduct
  • Movement and cognitive development — coordination and body-awareness work, built as skills in their own right
  • Cognitive micro-skills — the visual and auditory processing layer schoolwork runs on
  • Real motivation — effort and genuine wins instead of points and badges, plus nutrition and the routines that hold a plan together

Sessions run five to fifteen minutes. If your child is in a classroom, the course shows you how to partner with what the teacher is doing; if you homeschool, it speaks to you as the whole faculty — separately, because the two jobs are different.

What parents using Learning Success have told us

“He is starting activities on his own and then asking for help only when he needs it… silent reading much more in the last 2 weeks.” — Diane Kasterko

“He is doing grade level work now… The tutor said she can’t see dyslexia traits anymore.” — Arlene Zimmerman

This course is the map. All Access is the territory.

Understanding the approach is step one. All Access is everything the approach is made of: an assessment — a series of questionnaires about what you’re actually seeing at home, about forty-five minutes — and, within 48 hours of your finishing, your child’s personalized roadmap as a PDF naming which skill to build first, which program builds it, and what follows. Every program is included: Brain Bloom, Attentive Ear, the 5-Minute Reading Fix, number sense courses, and more, with coaching for you at every step. (Forty-eight hours is how long the document takes to reach you — not a timeline for your child.)

A screener is a starting point, not a diagnosis. If your child might need formal accommodations (an IEP or 504 plan), or you suspect a vision, hearing, or medical cause, pursue a professional evaluation too — that’s the only route to those supports.

Common questions from parents

Does “educational therapy” mean this treats dyslexia or other diagnoses?

No. Learning Success doesn’t diagnose or treat conditions — skills are built, taught, and practiced. The course name reflects the tradition the approach draws from; inside, you’ll find skill-building and parent coaching, with your child’s academic instruction continuing alongside.

Does this replace my child’s reading program or curriculum?

No — and any program that claims underlying-skills work alone will fix the academics is overselling. Your child’s academic teaching stays. This system builds the layer underneath it and coaches you through the practice.

Do I need a diagnosis before starting?

No. The approach works the same with or without a label. A screener is a starting point, not a diagnosis. If your child might need formal accommodations (an IEP or 504 plan), or you suspect a vision, hearing, or medical cause, pursue a professional evaluation too — that’s the only route to those supports.

How much time does this take a day?

Five to fifteen minutes. The tiny-wins rhythm isn’t a marketing line — it’s the operating principle, because short sessions are the ones families keep.
